Below is a current list of the equipment I use for my LRF. Plymouth has a many different marks, although not really necessary I like to have a rod suited to the conditions.

LRF Cyprus, little remaining fish or light rock fishing

So I like a holiday, especially if it has been planned around a bit of fishing. The trip to Cyprus was booked a week before we went so I had very little time to swat up on the area of Paphos . As it turned out I went to an aqua desert!!! beautiful clear waters, amazing reefs but no fish. It was a family holiday so I had no intentions of going out deep sea fishing but we did manage to get on a glass bottom boat. We floated over a spanish wreck but I only spotted about three fish about the size of our smelt???

Later we stopped near a reef so I took the opportunity to pull out my Graphiteleader compatto travel rod,  handy ehh!

I managed about four wee fish  no pics but they kind of looked like a smelt in colour but had more of a bronto/ dorado shape, only much smaller…… a size 10 fine shirasu ecogear jighead 2.5g with added split shot just to get down, loaded up with a green  aquagear strawtail grub.

Slightly disheartened I decided to put the five piece rod together again for a few hours before returning the wet UK. using the same egogear jig head with a tiny peice of power isome in pink I managed a few tiny black bream………….. I found out later the fresh water fishing is fantastic in a near by dam with Zander & largemouth bass on the list but like I said earlier  this was a family holiday….. Look how messed up the jig head is from all the attacks from the wee bream.

Look close enough at the ecogear shirasu fine jig head you can see the bite marks left from the aggressive little black bream from Cyprus.

LRF in Cyprus, if you are thinking about a fishing holiday in Paphos Cyprus I would urge you to think again unless you plan to go deepsea fishing or fancy a bit of fresh water on the near by dams.

Ecogear or Eco Warrior

Ecogear Bream prawn is also on the menu for our Harbour Pollock, caught using a Nories slow retrieve 74, Shimano Stella 100fe and Sunline rockfish 0.4 pe braid.

Nories Slow retreive 74 ( non F version) this rod loves to bend

Aji is Japanese for Scad. Scad are probably the most fun fish to catch on a light lure rod. I'm using a Nories Slow retreive suitable for casting weights up to 3.5g
This Fantastically powerful scad was caught using a 0.9g shirasu fine jig head with a small piece of pink Power Isome.

Plymouth Scad
This scad was caught using an ecogear 0.9g shirasu fine jig head with a small piece of pink Power Isome from Marukyu.

Mackerel from a harbour
This Mackerel went like stink, my Nories Slow retrieve can bend into a semi circle. caught thanks to the power of the isome in Pink.

Gold sinny wrasse
Gold sinny wrasse, some people say these wee fish are rare. Not in Plymouth. We are catching these wrasse regularly. Power isome cut into sections on a size 10 or smaller hook with spilt shot is a poller method of catching these. I caught this on a ecogear shirasu fine jig head weighting in a a mighty 0.9g

Had a wonderful night last night, fished a mark known for its weed and lost a far bit of tackle, I don’t like the idea of leaving my junk in the sea. I understand the jigheads eventualy  rust away quickly but what happens to all the soft plastics??

I got me thinking…..Geek stuff beware

Some of you might know I’m testing  some products by Ecogear Aquagear and Marukyu in the form Power Isome. We all know both products catch loads of fish and certainly give us the edge, accounting for most of the fish caught on the LRF shores.

Is there more to the ethos of Ecogear / Ecoaquagear? The clue is in the Name. The Ecogear / EcoAquagear products are 100%  perfectly  Biodegradable ( not just Biodegradable).

Some products decompose at faster rates than others. Ecogear products are designed to be fully fledged biodegradable plastics.

To cut out all the nitty gritty,Some companies claim to biodegradable, these plastics lose there form and become invisible to our eyes but still exist.  by taking extra measures Ecogear products go one step further by entering a cycle of nature! Totally non toxic and friendly to environment.

More info can be found here http://www.marukyu.com/eng/enviro/biodegradableworm.html

“An enzyme called lipase in microorganisms breaks up esters into alcohol and acid, which are eventually turned into water and carbon dioxide. The main material of ECOGEAR’s biodegradable plastic worms is therefore nontoxic and friendly to the environment.”

I knew Booze would play a part somewhere in the whole process 😉

Visit to an ole mark, Pie and chips, one dozen pollock, a pout and my first black Bream of the year

After loading up the fishing van with the Tict Inbite 710 tb rod, a stella 2500fe reel with a spool of sunline small game 2.5 flurocarbon main line, my prime area bag loaded with my New Ecogear & Aqua gear test products, Not forgetting my trusty majorcraft L600 6 meter landing pole.

I left the house at 7.30 bought a pie & chips at 7.45 arrived at a old Elphinstone 7.50 landed my first Black bream of the year by 7.55pm then I ate my pie n chips, caught loads of pollock & a wee pouting

The night was fast and furious the pollock were much larger than the ones I’ve been catching recently.

The wind picked up and the bites eased off, my lucky pink aqua strawtail grub lived to fight another round. I was happy as I had ticked off a load of fish in a short time and blasted my three species a night target.

I moved off to the ole mark, a large line of LRF boys already fishing. One or two might have noticed my new Ecogear team jacket 😉

I didn’t really fish, partly because it was already too busy and partly due to me yapping to the lads.

A few cuttle fish had been caught so I pulled the tict rod already rigged from Elphinstone clipped on a squid jig and began catching loads of cuttle fish, or should that read hooked loads of cuttle fish but could not land any of them. My now infamous 6 meter telescopic landing net could just about reach the water as long as you lay on your belly with your arm out but still they evaded me. 😦 I put it down to using the wrong rod. The Tick is far too powerful for them. last time I went for the squid I used a solid tip reins rod, still powerful in the blank but really bendy at the top end. The Tict inbite is a great rod for almost everything but maybe not a good egi rod. I had a Nories slow retrieve 74 ( non F version) in the fishing wagon too.

Ecogear team!

Exciting news, I’m on the Ecogear Team. This is fantastic news, in fact the excitement levels are almost on a par as the day  my Baby boy was born.

I received a box with Maruku logos on the outside…… (Maruku, Nories, Ecogear, Prime area, Fish League all fall under the same umbrella.)

My Box was filled with LRF goodies from Ecogear. The day it arrived was a Thursday which means fishing night.

Fishing the usual mark again…….I really must try somewhere else. Its getting so busy with LRFers but also bait boys on 50cc mopeds. I think the reason I consistently return is I enjoy meeting new lads with the same goals…… LRF SCAD.

The bait boys can Poke it, one almost came off his moped coming close to hitting a couple out walking. what is this boys a drag strip?also related to these bait boys…… my biggest fishing related hate is trash……These lads enjoy a box of five of Chicken from Kentucky washed down by a large can or twenty of MONSTER. Ok rant over but I do seriously hate rubbish on a mark that we can easily get thrown out from.

Back to the LRF, did i mention Scad?? I caught Two ( this pics would suggest loads) One ok size that put a mighty bend in the Nories Slow retrieve 710F and another that bent my rod into a mexican Mustache

Image

Random image but I think it explains my rods bend with a mighty scad.ImageImageImageImageImage

All in all a good night  I managed my new personal target of three Species every night and for the record , 4 poor cod about 12 pollock and two scad.

My Major craft L600 landing pole is becoming more & more helpful these days.

All fish were caught using Aqua Gear Katsu Merbaru Shirasu in Chartreuse or pink.  loaded on a Shirasu fine 0.9g Jig head size 10. For scad I would normally use a Aqua Katsu Aji Straight but I have so much faith in anything Ecogear / Aqua gear the fish seem to go nuts for everything in the range. Most popular I think is the Aqua Strawtail grub, Aqua Katsu Aji Straight, Aqua Merbaru Shirasu and the power Isome  from Marukyu. Its a good job I fished mostly ecogear products before getting the pro staff gig 😉

I usually use fluro straight through when fishing this mark because of the wind but it helps with the scan as It sinks. even in a slight head on wind I can cast under 1g huge distance is not really an issue as the fish are usually within 20 feet.

There is a really good buzz at the moment largely due to a comp being held by Lure Heaven

Thanks to Sam & Frankie for help with the landing net & the photography ( lightly edited to enhance my rugged good looks)

LRF Comedy Night and Bread

Tuesday nights are not only Two for one at Pizza Express but for me Tuesdays & Thursdays are fish nights.

Decided to pitch up to a lazy mark that has really been hit or miss these days, We always seem to hit loads of small Pollock and just miss out on the Scad. I really need to search out a new spot. ( A sentence I use on a regular basis)

Straight in on Pollock using a Nories Slow retrieve 710F paired up with a Shimano Stella 2500 fe loaded up with Sunline small game fluro 2.5lb. I recently bought some tict Bullhead jig heads and wanted to give them a try.

These jig heads have a groove cut out at the front to send more vibrations and tiny bubbles, I really liked the fishing 2g & 1.5 g jig heads. Ecogear Aqua strawtails in Chartreuse then changing through the colour range. I found the fish seemed to wise up to the lures whizzing about them. On each change a few fish would get caught before the bites dried up.

It wasn’t only the LRF pollock that had a fight in them, a small LRF sized random yokel turned up & squared up for a fight with one of the usual Light brigade. If the fishing wasn’t to finicky he might have got his way but hay…..we’re fishers not fighters.

Two of the regular light lure boys had downed tools in favour of bread??? Chasing the Mullet……..That is a fish sent to this planet to wind us good folk up.

Another funny night packed with fish in the shape of a Large ish scad, a decent Poor Cod an a huge arm full of pollock, not to mention the happy chatty ole fellow, a time bandit spoiling for a fight and the frustrations of the bread boys.

Finesse fishing Plymouth, Sunline & Ecogear

Ecogear Strawtail LRF lures always catch a large selection of Pollock.

Back in the devils backyard

Armed with another golden ticket allowing access to a very special mark I had very high expectations!!!!!
The mark usually fishes so well on the back tide……..not last night!
I got home rather deflated, but in reflection I had an alright night.
With the sun behind us our long shadows loomed inside the area we wanted to fish, this mark also fishes well in the dark! While waiting for the darkness I thought I spotted a Bass. Sight casting a Nories Shrilpin 2” lure with a ecogear shirasu jig head seemed to spook the fish. I seen another bass and began reeling in much quicker than usual……. My Rod, a Nories sea bass program tide controller slowly looped over, seaweed? The drag on the reel slowly turned picking up speed gradually. It must be weed in the current, no sign of any head shaking resistance. I continued reeling in. My Mate Tony went for the net, I didn’t question him thinking he was kindly going to help me with the mess on the hook. All of a sudden the line went slack…. I’m free cool. Then the usually calm Tony shouts reel faster it’s coming towards you…… With in seconds a fine specimen was in the net. All very unexciting, a good few reports of mullet suggest they go like stink. My mullet was rather uneventful but a first for me.

As the sun sank into Plymouth Hoe I was bracing myself for a night of crazy Bass fishing. All about large takes from the surface producing. Ripples every where, dorsil fins up out of the water it had to be a good night. I went slightly smaller on my jighead down to a size ten 0.9 gram with a ecogear aquagear aji straight.

The next and only fish was a large mackerel! He made my night, he gave me the fight the mullet should have. He was awesome
