Egi Cuttle fish and Squid on a Lure

I had been having problems landing cuttle fish recently, I went into the Art of fishing to get me a slightly heaver Squid Jig. Jo Pointed me over to the fish League Squid jigs he lightest being 10g. Speaking to some people about squid jigs there seems to be a bit of confession  with the info on the box. mine states 2.5 but this is not the casting weight.

I pulled out the Nories Jighead snapper rock fish bottom, this is a solidtip jigging rod but also doubles up nicely for a LRF rod with a heap of power.

Mike Sullavan was already fishing and landing Squid & cuttle.

I decided to have a try for wee fish and first cast was rewarded with a decent smelt, second cast a Polock & third cast a Poor cod. The makings of a good night you would think???? sadly it wasn’t.

“When the Squid are on the go  the Fishing is Slow”

I switched over to my new Fish League jig and the takes began, but could I land them…… meanwhile Mike was swinging the cuttle about like an Olympic sport.

I decided to pull out the Majorcraft L600 six meter telescopic landing net, and with the help of Frankie my first Squid of the year was landed. Big un an all.

I eventually caught a cuttlle fish, my first ever!

Squiding in Plymouth, with the help of my Majorcraft landing net my First LRF Squid was landed. I was using a Nories Jighead Snapper and a fish league jig

Ecogear team!

Exciting news, I’m on the Ecogear Team. This is fantastic news, in fact the excitement levels are almost on a par as the day  my Baby boy was born.

I received a box with Maruku logos on the outside…… (Maruku, Nories, Ecogear, Prime area, Fish League all fall under the same umbrella.)

My Box was filled with LRF goodies from Ecogear. The day it arrived was a Thursday which means fishing night.

Fishing the usual mark again…….I really must try somewhere else. Its getting so busy with LRFers but also bait boys on 50cc mopeds. I think the reason I consistently return is I enjoy meeting new lads with the same goals…… LRF SCAD.

The bait boys can Poke it, one almost came off his moped coming close to hitting a couple out walking. what is this boys a drag strip?also related to these bait boys…… my biggest fishing related hate is trash……These lads enjoy a box of five of Chicken from Kentucky washed down by a large can or twenty of MONSTER. Ok rant over but I do seriously hate rubbish on a mark that we can easily get thrown out from.

Back to the LRF, did i mention Scad?? I caught Two ( this pics would suggest loads) One ok size that put a mighty bend in the Nories Slow retrieve 710F and another that bent my rod into a mexican Mustache

Random image but I think it explains my rods bend with a mighty scad.ImageImageImageImageImage

All in all a good night  I managed my new personal target of three Species every night and for the record , 4 poor cod about 12 pollock and two scad.

My Major craft L600 landing pole is becoming more & more helpful these days.

All fish were caught using Aqua Gear Katsu Merbaru Shirasu in Chartreuse or pink.  loaded on a Shirasu fine 0.9g Jig head size 10. For scad I would normally use a Aqua Katsu Aji Straight but I have so much faith in anything Ecogear / Aqua gear the fish seem to go nuts for everything in the range. Most popular I think is the Aqua Strawtail grub, Aqua Katsu Aji Straight, Aqua Merbaru Shirasu and the power Isome  from Marukyu. Its a good job I fished mostly ecogear products before getting the pro staff gig 😉

I usually use fluro straight through when fishing this mark because of the wind but it helps with the scan as It sinks. even in a slight head on wind I can cast under 1g huge distance is not really an issue as the fish are usually within 20 feet.

There is a really good buzz at the moment largely due to a comp being held by Lure Heaven

Thanks to Sam & Frankie for help with the landing net & the photography ( lightly edited to enhance my rugged good looks)

UFC Pollock, Heavy weight Bass & poor Cod

I managed to get a golden ticket into a very restricted area that always fishes really for me.

I took along my Nories RockFish Bottom UL, 2010 Certate reel spooled up with Sunline Rockfish PE 0.3 braid with a two foot Sunline 6lb Siglon FC leader.

Straight away I was into pollock, Some people moan about Pollock being rats of the ocean but me, I like em. I like the opportunity to test out lures that might not always get a look in due to the mega success I’m having with Ecogear Aqua lures mainly strawtail grubs & the Power Isome rag worm imitation.

On thursday I started off with an aqua Strawtail  grub in Orange with a 1.8 g Shirasu Fine Head size 6 hook also from ecogear   as the games begun.

The pollock were unusually feisty battling all the way to the pontoon I was casting of many of them taking a last effort deep dive taking line off an already tight drag. the stamp of pollock was pretty good really with sizes ranging from 1lb – to almost 3lb on the bogas

I switched over to a regular straw tail in Pink  ( no scent but much tougher than the Aqua so tend to last longer)  first cast, I let it sink before lifting the rod gently………..Yep fish on but this wasn’t a pollock. this fish really put up a fight taking line, making dives off, surfacing allowing me to see the tell tail flash of silver before shooting off into another direction.

The rod & reel both worked well, for me my current favourite combination.

Danny came along to my rescue with a landing net, 2 1/2 pound on the bogas. Great night! a few more fish came along including a Poor cod.

I also took out for the first time my latest edition, a Nories rough surf 88, beautiful rod seems really well balanced with a Certate 2500. I fished with a Zenith  z-claw ‘deadfish’ I had Sunline Momentum 4×4 16lb with a 16lb leader also sunline siglon fluro carbon.

I must admit the calling for the light gear was stronger so went back to the LRF rod of the night.
